5 Ways to Die - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This map is a series of rooms with two doors to choose. One path leads to death and the other leads to the next room. There are 5 rooms. I think it was like, you had a coin-flip chance each room to die depending on your choice. I just happened to choose right each time and survived to the end- left, left, right, left- then you throw a grenade at a barney surrounded by trip mines, jump behind a blast shield, and the level is over. That was the extent of my experience. I believe my friend who made different choices than the ones I made as I went forward was killed by level geometry or something.      Was very short, very fast. I don't hav

You have a series of five binary choices (left or right) and choosing wrong kills you. The map description is accurate, it's pure luck, unless you go left, left, right, left, right, then you've cheated to the end. The puzzle at the end is throwing a grenade at Barney.      Overall, I didn't like it. Living or dying is arbitrary and the final puzzle is finding a way to detonate explosives, something Half-life and Sven players should know how to do at this point. The map ends after that and I ended up in the ca

Ressya no Tabi - The Train Travel - Dunkelschwamm

This map is very similar in style, the gameplay is completely changed so that players can take a nice sightseeing tour around Japan travelling by train. Throughout the adventure the players partake in multiple vacation-like activities, such as visiting a scenic overlook by a shopping district, climbing a castle under renovation, performing community service at a lake, making pottery, and visiting two temples. At each location there is some kind of activity to be performed, and often a run-in wi

The entire premise is that the players are taking a train trip to various locales There is a train station at the start of the map where players board the train, then players are teleported onto the train, already in motion, and get to explore all the cars. The first stop is some market in a downtown area, the second stop is a Japanese castle, then a pond, a pottery studio, a giant buddha statue, and finally a temple, for a total of six stops. Throughout the map players use cell phones to take pictures to rea

It Has Leaks - Dunkelschwamm

Released officially in the Sven Co-op 4 release, this map claims to have leaks. The name is a non-sequitur, as the main point of the map is to retrieve the scroll of wisdom. SCMapDB page Author: Skacky Date of final release: 2011 Maps in package: 1 Map review of It Has Leaks (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 15, 2022 | 3300 characters      It Has Leaks was an old favorite of mine back in the Sven Co-op 4.0 days. Of course, those days are long ago, and we've come a long way. Does It Has Leaks hold up?      The first thing you'll notice about IHL is its striking style. It has a decidedly Quake/Hexen 2 feel to it, and takes place entirely in dingy Eldritch libraries. Everything from the red skybox to the lighting is fantastic throughout the map, and the visuals hold up even after all these years.      The enemies you'll be fighting throughout are alien controllers, pit drones, voltigores, and a baby gargantua. Along the way there's also some

I don't remember much of it or how I felt about it then. But now that I've played it again it is solidly all right.      Before I even get into the map itself I want to talk about the textures. The whole map takes place in a library and there are some interesting textures used for the library shelves. There are jars of weird liquids, scrolls, and of course books. The lighting is very moody and really sells the fantasy medieval library vibe the map has. The architecture is somewhat alien and reminiscent of Quake in some places, like the catwalk

5chan - Dunkelschwamm

5chan is very similar to the maps I used to make (and abandoned halfway through) when I was a younger, smaller version of myself. It's a crazy patchwork of sights and sounds with all sorts of strange things to look at. SCMapDB page Author: Keen Date of final release: 2016 Maps in package: 1 Map review of 5chan (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | December 5, 2021 | 3143 characters      5chan is a map which evokes imageboard aesthetics and moods from 10 years ago via memes, smut, and uncomfortable level design. If you aren't on board from the beginning with straight-up pornography being present you may find yourself needing a moment of adjustment.      The map sets itself up as a scavenger hunt within a large surreal environment with walls made out of memes and smut. I don't want to be the one to say it, but some of it is so specific that it starts to feel like "Oh, this guy's into something. Alright." I guess that's kind of the peril of

I played it after the 4chan gasworks map, and just like that map the strange novelty wears off all too soon. Also, this map is labelled as abandoned, I am going to review it like it is complete because it is on this site listed as a map and if it wasn't fit to be played it wouldn't be here.      I was pleased to see enemies in this map, I thought maybe this would be a map with actual objectives and gameplay. Well, I barely got to interact with the enemies because the numerous allies scattered around the map killed them

Half-Quake Amen Coop - Dunkelschwamm

Half-Quake Amen is a rather famous mod with a focus on save scumming and nasty traps. I haven't played the standalone mod but from what I hear it's really focused on messing with the player. Now it is available for Sven Co-op at the expense of some of its features. It's funny, tricky, and does a lot of weird gonzo shit that pokes fun at the concepts of "intuitive gameplay" and "rule of fun" which were all the craze when Half-Life had come out. Often the player is comedically punished for relying on intuition, and the mod reminds you from beginning to end that this is Half-Quake and you are her

So when we got back into Sven and saw that Half Quake was converted we finally got to playing it.      I had fun. I love the concept of the creators themselves having a conversation with the player, not in a self-insert cringy kind
