Haunted - Dunkelschwamm

Haunted is an interesting concept. The players fight ghosts (normal enemies made transparent and glowy) but it takes place in some mountain facility instead of a location that is more traditionally known for ghosts, like a house or a castle. SCMapDB page Author: Fourth Letter Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Haunted (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 5, 2021 | 1362 characters      Haunted was a fun map, simply put. It's a walkthrough map full of enemies to shoot, some of which have an additive effect applied to them to make them appear ghostly (mostly makes them easier to to shoot in the dark).      The environments are brushed out and lit in a very fun way which makes each room very memorable and easy to navigate.      There were some fun little puzzles, one which I particularly liked involved advancing through a corridor full of trigger lasers for turrets as gonomes come bounding in from the opposite end.      The final bi

You respawn with a crowbar in hand so you ahve to change to a shotgun while being tickled by gonomes and zombies. It's a huge pain and not a great start to an otherwise solid map.      There is one puzzle that isn't signposted very well. There is a button on an electrical box that starts a fire. The key here is to push the nearby explosive crate into it and that will destroy the grating on the door above. It took a while to figure that out.

Halloween Hospital - Dunkelschwamm

Are you ready for Halloween in a Hospital? This map uses the typical scary map formula, respawning zombies, a maze, and players must go on a scavenger hunt to figure out how to progress. SCMapDB page Author: GreenTea MiaoMiaoLe Date of final release: 2017 Maps in package: 1 Map review of High Rise (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | November 28, 2021 | 4417 characters      Halloween Hospital is a map that is like going to a really neat haunted house but you have to wade through thigh-high tar everywhere you go. Throughout there is some really fun brushwork and textures working together with minimal lighting to create a very spooky environment with variety, memorable locations, and thick atmosphere. The enemies, however, are where things unfortunately fall apart a bit.      First, a look at the progression of the map: The map begins with a goal of finding blue, lit squares and shooting them throughout the map. Doing so unlocks a later area. Now, when I was playing w

Usually they are mazes filled with respawning enemies (typically Afraid of Monsters zombies) and I don't have a lot of fun playing them. This map is exactly all that but I actually managed to play to the end and beat it and didn't have a terrible time doing it.      The map is a big hospital with most of its doors locked. You can peek in through windows and see future areas, there is a lot of teasing of future areas which is nice because you know where to look when doors open and things unlock. Getting into the hospital was kind

Halloween Construction - Dunkelschwamm

This map has Halloween in the name, but unlike other Halloween map it isn't obvious. The map sure is dark and spooky but the author has made other maps that are more Halloweeny. There are some segments early on in particular where the players face multiple gonomes in a pitch-black underground tunnel, each charging down the tunnel at a retreating player as their flashlight bounces fro

The map is straightforward, its got good enemy balance, nice weapon selection, and can be finished quite fast.      There is only one thing I didn't like about the map and that was that enemies appear in the player spawn after a certain point in the game. They are not difficult to kill but I just don't understand why it was necessary to put them there. It just means that when I spawn I have to fight the same enemies over and over again. It's not a good design choice to spawn in next to enemies.      On thing of particular note is t

It has a very goofy, lighthearted tone supported by a brightly colored, smiley-faced Gonome named "Good Guy :>" who can aide the player in combat. The lighthearted feel is also helped with some cartoony ghost buttons, some tongue-in-cheek humor throughout, and some bright neon-lit thresholds separating the sections of the map.      The enemies, conversely, are your standard, overused Afrai

The zombies use the Afraid of Monsters skins so they are very fast. They also have too much health. At first this was somewhat bearable, my teammate and I were progressing through the map simply by running by them. But then we unlocked what seems to be the last boss and suddenly we weren't spawning in our usual spawn point. We were spawning all over the map. The map was filled with high health ultra f

Halloween Blackwoods - Dunkelschwamm

Halloween blackwoods is one of a few maps made by a Chinese mapper known as GreenTea MiaoMiaoLe. Due to language and regional barriers that's really all I know of the mapper. I get the appeal of making an enemy an invisible, borderline-unkillable monster that you just have to maneuver around is. Ever since the original Alone in the Dark I think people had an understanding that frustrating situations where power is stripped from you are scary, and thus make for interesting horror games. My experience can be summarized in one sentence: I don't like invisible enemies.      There are 2(?) invisible zombies with tons of health and they plague the players pretty much the entire game. Then you open a door and the map is over. I had no fun.      I guess the aesthetic was pretty cool. There was a large windmill with turning blades that l

I really enjoyed the custom models and fun sound effects but level design and bugs made me want to quit the game early and play something else.      The game starts off strong but the level end is a impressive portal that sucks up the players. Only it didn't work right when I did it and my teammate and I ended up pressed against the wall with no way to actually move into the portal.
