A Day in Hell - Dunkelschwamm

Image
A Day in Hell comes in two flavors, a daytime map with a house filled with human grunts and a nighttime map with a house filled with zombies that teleports players to an arena to fight human grunts after they've finished clearing the house. SCMapDB page Author: MassAsster Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of A Day in Hell (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 29, 2021 | 7535 characters      A Day In Hell is a 2-part mediocre Sven Co-op mapset that is entirely functional and nothing spectacular. What I will say to its credit is that it mostly works, it's about average quality, it's full of rookie mistakes, and it's full of action.      A Day In Hell is split into two maps: The first is a daytime assault on a house complex full of grunts. The second map is the same house, but at night, and full of zombies, bullsquid minibosses, and gonome bosses. That same second map has a secondary mission which I'll talk more about

It does a few things I like and it does a few things I don't like, most times it seems to do things that have good and bad sides to it that all balance out. I played the e1 map first, it started us off in a nice spawn room with a decent selection of weapons and no ammo, which is a chronic problem in most Sven maps, lack of ammo. Taking a single step forward activates a cutscene explaining our mission. Swimming through the portal flanked by two scream-mask wearing guards you get to a h

8jump - Dunkelschwamm

Image
As suggested by the name, this map has eight chambers of jumping puzzles. Some of the jumping is easy and some is so hard as to be almost impossible. Neither of us knew the jump techniques needed to leave the first area. We set the gravity low and jumped around the map. It was kinda fun to jump around with low gravity. Aside from some curious shapes in the brushwork, such as a map with pyramid-shaped spikes jutting from multiple spots in a wall, the visuals were fairly dull, bland, repetitive, devoid of memorable style. I don't think it was going for anything more than spartan visuals, but if I was accomplishing the jump puzzles I would feel a little let down from the progression. It also seemed as though the easier jump puzzles came after the much, much harder

Septic Morass - Dunkelschwamm

Septic Morass is an unfinished map made by RNG, an author known for making absolutely beautiful maps. Unfortunately this one is unfinished and abandoned so we will never see what it would have become. If it ever updates and finishes I'll happily revisit it and update my review.      RNG is a name in Sven Co-op mapping which can be closely associated with thick, grimy, moody atmospheres and high-caliber walkthrough progression. Each of RNG's maps has distinct personality that sets it apart from other maps, and Septic Morass is no different. From head to toe the map is dressed up in expert brush and model work with intense colored lighting whi

747 - GrandmasterJ

747 is a Counter-Strike 1.6 map converted to Sven Co-op. The level design is untouched and is optimized for objective based team play with some HEV and weapons scattered around. Well I did try some light 1v1 pvp on this map just to test it out. I will say the PVP works, I was messing around and actually damaged my teamma- I mean sworn nemesis and we decided to go for it.      First off, I never played this map in Counter-Strike 1.6 so I don't know how it plays there. But I can say the map is clearly intended to have two sides clash around the plane. Since the map is de I can only assume the terrorists had to bomb the plane. In that context I can see how the m

Swiss Cheese Halloween - GrandmasterJ

Swiss Cheese Halloween is a conversion of an ancient Half-Life mod of the same name. It was made back in the whimsical time of 2002 by an author who goes by Swiss Cheese, hence the map name. SCMapDB page Original mod author: Swiss Cheese Conversion author: Garompa Date of original mod release: 2002 Date of final Sven map release: 2020 Maps in package: 12 Map review of Swiss Cheese Halloween (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | November 11, 2021 | 3718 characters      Swiss Cheese Halloween is a really fun and charming map series that unfortunately has not held up well over the years. I really enjoyed the custom models and fun sound effects but level design and bugs made me want to quit the game early and play something else.      The game starts off strong but the level end is a impressive portal that sucks up the players. Only it didn't work right when I did it and my teammate and I ended up pressed against the wall with no way to actually move into the portal.
