Nagafens Lair - Dunkelschwamm

Image
This is a map based on Everquest, something I have zero experience with. At the very least the map is dripping in fantasy aesthetic, from the level design to the custom models, the map reminds me of playing Dungeons and Dragons. SCMapDB page Author: Sword666 Date of final release: 2021 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Nagafens Lair (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | January 15, 2022 | 4306 characters      Man what the fuck did I just play?      Nagafen's lair is an incredibly unambitious attempt at a very ambitious idea. Teleporter-based class selection informs which kind of character you'll be, though the icon of the helmet gives the player a crowbar, a wrench, a pistol, and a medkit, all of which are pretty crucial to proceeding. My teammate chose different classes but seemed constantly hurting for utility.      The actual gameplay starts confusingly with a lava flow scene devoid of scale or grandeur, barred are nerfed with invisible walls. The natural p

Fun Robo Run - Dunkelschwamm

Image
The map description notes that the lift shaped like a hand in the above picture does not work. This really sets the tone for the quality of this map. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Fun Robo Run (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | December 30, 2021 | 3927 characters      "A walkthrough map of sorts." I guess if you put a gun to my head and demanded that I put a genre to these maps that's what I'd give you. It feels more like screw-around maps really, but what's the point in such distinction when discussing a Robootto map?      First of all, the map is broken and pays no mind to being playable. In both versions a lift necessary for leaving the first area is broken in different ways. The lift, like any and all parts of this map, are so superfluous that it's a question as to why the lift even exists in the first place if Robootto can't even be bothered to make it right. As a compro

Crazy Labyrinth - Dunkelschwamm

Image
Long hallways with no branching paths are not labyrinths. This map is a long hallway with no branching paths. SCMapDB page Author: Robootto Date of final release: 2005 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Crazy Labyrinth (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | December 12, 2021 | 2255 characters      The incredible thing about Robooto's body of work is that you never know what kind of madness it will lay upon your lap next. You're never entirely sure to what extent the map is a joke at the player's expense at to what extent it is actually just Robooto's boredom scouring Goldsrc for extreme anti-gameplay ideas and bringing them into existence just to make the world a little more chaotic.      Crazy Labyrinth is a long hallway winding back and forth, back and forth, mostly in the dark, utterly linearly, until it ends at a tiny brushwork award. The hallway is mostly homogenous all the way through. Any seeming offshoot is just a waste of time along the way, a

28 Corp. - Dunkelschwamm

Image
28 Corp. is a map filled with stretched out cars and other dubious design choices. It's a map that tries to do a lot without much thought actually put into it. SCMapDB page Author: amckern Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of 28 Corp. (originally posted on SCMapDB) by dunkelschwamm | November 28, 2021 | 2389 characters      28-corp is a map that feels weird to review because it doesn't feel finished. There's glaring issues from the moment the map begins, with a parking lot full of improperly proportioned vehicles, a clearly broken tank turret entity which takes forever to destroy as it bafflingly kills off players, and respawning enemies who become an issue the moment the players accidentally open the then-unclosable glass door. That is the first thing that happens in this map.      Opposite of this glass door, however, are the stairs up. What may not be obvious at first to the player is that moving up through the building is how to proceed, rath

1-6 - GrandmasterJ

Image
1-6 is a series of maps labelled 1 through 6, this is some real early Sven stuff. The author is amckern (with a small 'a') who has gone on to make really important mapping tools for Sven along with plenty of other maps. SCMapDB page Author: amckern Date of release: 2002 Maps in package: 6 Map review of 1-6 (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | November 27, 2021 | 1329 characters     After playing this map series the dominating thought on my mind was 'this is baby's first map'. The proportions on everything is absolutely crazy. There are tall and thing black mesa SUVs in a parking garage (that was under a room filled with drainable water), there are very steep ramps, and the best example I can give of wonky architecture; a doorway with a ramp that you have to crouch to actually go through. The map series is just the numbers 1-6 too. Who does that?      It's not the worst map I've played. But it reeks of amateur hour. I haven't played any

Halloween Blackwoods - GrandmasterJ

Image
Halloween blackwoods is one of a few maps made by a Chinese mapper known as GreenTea MiaoMiaoLe. Due to language and regional barriers that's really all I know of the mapper. This individual has made no less than four Halloween maps along with two non-Halloween but still horror-themed maps. This particular one is unfinished and it shows. SCMapDB page Author: GreenTea MiaoMiaoLe Date of final release: 2013 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Halloween Blackwoods (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | November 27, 2021 | 883 characters      I didn't have any expectations going into this map and I was still disappointed. My experience can be summarized in one sentence: I don't like invisible enemies.      There are 2(?) invisible zombies with tons of health and they plague the players pretty much the entire game. Then you open a door and the map is over. I had no fun.      I guess the aesthetic was pretty cool. There was a large windmill with turning blades that l
