Attack - GrandmasterJ

Attack aliens in the courtyard, behind the building, and sometimes in spawn if they can manage to walk through the front door. This is a small map with plenty of combat.

Map review of Attack

Aliens are attacking, this map plays more like a defense map. Players start in a room looking out some windows in a second story room in a building. There is a door here that shows a message stating we'll need explosives to get through it. The other door leads down stairs to outside the building. The courtyard is filled with zombies, vortigaunts, and shock troopers. These all respawn endlessly the entire map.

From here I went forward and leapt over a small gate to examine a waterfall that eventually led to snarks, both the weapon and the enemy, on a ledge that was frustratingly hard to climb up onto. My teammate went around the building and picked up some grenades, which spawned a gargantua out in front that started fighting with the shock troopers. From the back area the players can get onto the roof and the ground floor, the latter contains a crossbow.

Once we blew the door open an even bigger gargantua showed up. The door revealed an armory, the only explosive in this armory was a rocket launcher on the top of a shelf so high that two players are required to get it. This was incredibly annoying and if either of us wanted it we had to wait around and not receive a rocket launcher because the rocket launcher does not stay after being picked up.

Both the regular gargantua and the big garg can shoot flames through the spawn room windows. Enemies also had a habit of walking up the stairs and opening the doors to spawn, zombies and vortigaunts. Spawn was not safe. But the big gargantua did clip through the wall of spawn many times so we were able to nail him with rockets, although spawn is small enough that we took splash damage every time. Eventually the big garg died and the map immediately ends, It took less than 15 minutes for us to beat.

It's a fun map, I thought it was going to be a strictly horde map but it had a couple side areas to explore and an end. The big gargantua did not work well though, clipping through spawn constantly. Both gargs can shoot flames through the windows too and we would frequently spawn right in front of them, at risk of taking damage the moment we pop into existence.

Pros:

  • I liked the couple of side areas we could go
  • the mix of enemies that hate each other provide lots of cover for players
  • it wasn't just horde, there was progression and a conclusion

Cons:

  • the ledge with the snarks is bad and I don't like it
  • the rocket launcher did not need to require two players
  • the gargs can shoot flames directly into spawning players' faces

Score: 5 / 10
