Annihilation - GrandmasterJ

Image
Annihilation is a heavy word, it's one of those words where if used as a name it needs to really illustrate the destructive power within. This map is forgettable walkthrough map through rough rooms and halls. SCMapDB page Author: Skals Date of final release: 2007 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Annihilation (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 27, 2022 | 1876 characters      Annihilation is a short map and according to the map description there are four objectives to complete, let me say right now that I beat the map without clearing the labs. The level was well done, if a bit short. Enemies burst through walls more than once in some pretty neat simple scenes.      There are friendly soldiers and turrets here to help, the turrets especially do a good job cutting down the enemy waves. There are underbarrel grenades and HEV in the spawn which help a lot. There is just enough to stock one person up, players will have to share carefully or wait for the respawn.

Apache - GrandmasterJ

Image
As you may have guessed from the map name and the above picture, this is a map about fighting an Apache helicopter. The map consists of a hallway and a courtyard and will end with the apache's death SCMapDB page Author: Wildcat Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Apache (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | March 5, 2022 | 2516 characters      Inspired by a particularly bad fight with an apache I thought I would play a map designed around the apache. There were a lot more robo grunts than I thought there would be.      The map design is simple, players spawn at the end of a hallway with two turns in it. There is a room immediately to the left which has a shotgun, ammo, health, and HEV. At the other end of the hallway is a room that opens up to a courtyard where the infamous apache lives. Robot grunts continuously spawn in this arena and rush into the hallway. They can and frequently do make it to spawn and give players a hard time. There ar

Actual - GrandmasterJ

Actual is an early Sven map where players take on the role of airplane crash survivors. They must penetrate a strange laboratory in order to escape the wreckage. SCMapDB page Author: The_6th_Monkey Date of final release: 2003 Maps in package: 2 Map review of Actual (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 23, 2022 | 6530 characters      This is a map that I had high hopes for. The screenshots for it look pretty good and I thought the story would lead us somewhere interesting. It had its ups and downs nut ultimately I think the map kind of flopped.      Players start out in an airplane. The proportions are horrible, chairs are massive and everything seems really big. Maybe this is how first class VIPs fly, but in my experience this plane was like three times too big. Then the plane begins to crash, there is a pretty cool bit where a hole opens up in the plane and we get to see simple scenery rush by. I thought it looked great. When the plane finished crashing I ass

Moria - GrandmasterJ

We must face the long dark of Moria. Be on your guard. There are older and fouler things than Orcs, in the deep places of the world. SCMapDB page Author: NIPPER Date of final release: 2004, community fix on 2019 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Moria (originally posted on SCMapDB) by GrandmasterJ | January 23, 2022 | 6267 characters      When I was a wee lad playing Counter-Strike 1.6 I knew of Nipper from the great and fun maps he made, usually with a prominently displayed "NIPPER" somewhere in the map. When I first got into Sven all those years ago I saw that Nipper had made a bunch of Sven maps and from then I had just assumed they were the greatest Sven maps ever made. Now that I'm older and cynical I can understand that not all of Nipper's ideas were solid gold.      The map starts off with a pet peeve of mine, enemies in player spawn. This isn't so bad in this map, as players spawn on a raised platform around the edge of the room. But the middle area

Septic Morass - GrandmasterJ

Septic Morass is an unfinished map made by RNG, an author known for making absolutely beautiful maps. Unfortunately this one is unfinished and abandoned so we will never see what it would have become. SCMapDB page Author: RNG Date of final release: 2008 Maps in package: 1 Map review of Septic Morass (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by GrandmasterJ | December 12, 2021 | 557 characters      This map is unfinished and a demo. It still looks real interesting and there are fun moments. RNG as always delivers some truly great looking level design. The atmosphere was great from start to finish. But unfortunately due to its unfinished state it ends abruptly and all too soon. Pros: Looks good plays well Cons: unfinished Score: 5.5 / 10

747 - Dunkelschwamm

Image
747 is a Counter-Strike 1.6 map converted to Sven Co-op. The level design is untouched and is optimized for objective based team play with some HEV and weapons scattered around. SCMapDB page Original map authors: Leon Nieuwoudt and Stephen Superville Conversion author: Jmal Date of original map release: 1999 Date of final Sven Map release: 2020 Maps in package: 1 Map review of 747 (originally posted on SCMapDB)  by dunkelschwamm | December 11, 2021 | 2333 characters      747 was originally a Counter-Strike map. I imagine, as a Counter-Strike map, this would be an incredibly tense experience. As a Sven Co-op deathmatch map it's got some pretty stilted gameplay. Let me explain.      The map is laid out as follows: the plane is the central area of gameplay, split between three floors. There's a cargo bay, a passenger floor, and a first class and cockpit floor. The passenger areas are separated, much like within a real airplane, with curtains which make it hard to see into t
